Guest speaker discusses test anxiety with students

The CCQ English Language Center Professional Development Committee has recently collaborated with the Society of Friends of Mental Health- “Wayak”, a non-profit organization in Doha that is built on many specialists’ voluntary efforts.

After correspondence with Dr. Simreen, the Head of Wayak Organization, Ms. Dabayh Al-Meqbali,  a specialist from Wayak volunteered to lecture CCQ Foundation Level 1 students  on “the factors that lead to Freshmen’s anxiety when they registered at Tertiary level.”   The Jan. 26 lecture discussed ‘Test Anxiety,’ stressing on its causes and symptoms. Al-Meqbali also discussed strategies to reduce anxiety’s  negative consequences on students’ personal  and academic life.

Al-Meqbali’s lecture defined terms such as  “’Foreign language Anxiety.”  “Transitional Anxiety”,  “Facilitating Anxiety,’ “Debilitating Anxiety”, and many others, focusing on their interrelationship  to Level 1  students’ anxiety. The lecture was presented in Arabic, as level 1 students are not familiar with English psychological terms. The attendees showed a great interest in the lecture.

At the end of the lecture, Ms.  Al-Meqbali  was recognized by CCQ-  ESL  representatives, Dr. Sabah and Ms. Maryam Salem, who presented her with the CCQ Logo and calendar as CCQ Department of Public Relations thankfully suggested.  The Professional Development Committee is now working on inviting as many guest speakers as possible to help our students solve their academic problems.

The PD Committee is now collaborating with the American Embassy in Doha to promote a cultural and academic programs where our faculty can get acquainted with many new  ESL pedagogical trends in the world.
